Why Bonnie & Skirts at Paper Tiger thoughts
this is all from my instagram – and i did not have my good camera with me so excuse the photos
When I knew I was headed to San Antonio for work, I really was hoping I’d get a show in at Paper Tiger – a venue that is, in my mind at least, synonymous with the city’s music scene. When I looked into it, it didn’t seem like it would work out, even extending the trip a few days.
Then, Why Bonnie announced a Texas tour with Skirts, a great combo of bands with deep roots in the state. I had rough plans to get to a Spurs game but punted them for this show.
I loved Skirts’ opening set, perfect vibes, befitting of Double Double Whammy.
Why Bonnie’s set was a blast. Poking fun at the crazy dynamic of the metal show in the other room. There was a ramble about “Hot Frosty”, a movie about a hot snowman come to life? (and the people chanted for it??) (my coworker also brought this movie up??)
Anyway, their music is fantastic, and their latest record, Wish on the Bone is among the best new music out there this year. Check it out. Really incredible blend of styles that has resulted in the term “shoegaze-icana” being on their wikipedia page???
(Why Bonnie. Unquestionably great. But some things just demand a question mark. except for their name.)
And Paper Tiger was really damn cool. Two rooms, Why Bonnie was in the smaller one, and it reminded me a bit of the Silent Barn in Brooklyn, a place that’ll forever be among my favorites. A courtyard, a window to the outside world. And a cold evening made it even feel like home.
